Hypnotherapy

During hypnosis I utilize certain exercises and techniques to help bring about a trance state. This is simply a deeply relaxed, yet focused state of consciousness. In this state you are more open to ideas and images that you want to work on. During hypnosis you will be at ease physically and yet fully awake mentally. Your conscious mind, think of that part of the brain that is always chattering at you, becomes more still and your unconscious mind becomes more focused. I like to say that hypnosis allows you to get out of your own way, so you can work on the things that are important to you. I have used hypnosis with trauma, sleep disturbance, pain management, unhealthy relationship with food and body image. These are just e few examples of topics that can be helped with hypnotherapy.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EDMR)

Is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches. Complete treatment of the targets involves a three pronged protocol (1-past memories, 2-present disturbance, 3-future actions), and are needed to alleviate the symptoms and address the complete clinical picture. The goal of EMDR therapy is to process completely the experiences that are causing problems, and to include new ones that are needed for full health. “Processing” does not mean talking about it. “Processing” means setting up a learning state that will allow experiences that are causing problems to be “digested” and stored appropriately in your brain. That means that what is useful to you from an experience will be learned, and stored with appropriate emotions in your brain, and be able to guide you in positive ways in the future. The inappropriate emotions, beliefs, and body sensations will be discarded. Negative emotions, feelings and behaviors are generally caused by unresolved earlier experiences that are pushing you in the wrong directions. The goal of EMDR therapy is to leave you with the emotions, understanding, and perspectives that will lead to healthy and useful behaviors and interactions.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive behavioral treatment that was originally developed to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and it is now recognized as the gold standard psychological treatment for this population. In addition, research has shown that it is effective in treating a wide range of other disorders such as substance dependence, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders. DBT includes four sets of behavioral skills. • Mindfulness:the practice of being fully aware and present in this one moment • Distress Tolerance:how to tolerate pain in difficult situations, not change it • Interpersonal Effectiveness:how to ask for what you want and say no while maintaining self-respect and relationships with others • Emotion Regulation:how to change emotions that you want to change
